Other Activities Available in the Yakutat Area

Surfing

The more adventurous can take advantage of Yakutat miles of beach in a way you might not expect.  Yakutat is one of Alaska’s surfing hotspots.  Every year a few hardcore surfers shun the typical tropical surf destinations and make the journey to Yakutat.   The good news is that you don’t have to be a jet set professional surfer to sample the areas  excellent waves.  Wetsuits and boards can be rented in town at the local surf shop: Icy Waves.  Cannon Beach, a few miles out of town is a good place to start your hunt for your waves.  You will quickly find there are miles of beach to explore.  It’s a little known fact that surfing can actually be combined with birding; yielding up close look’s at gulls, sea ducks, loons, cormorants, terns, and other inshore species.

Fishing

There are many great fishing opportunities around the Yakutat area.  From Steelhead in the Situk to Halibut in the saltwater there is always a species in season.  Check out the season chart to see what might be available during your visit.  Did you know that the Halibut limit is two per person in the Yakutat fishery?  All areas north of this fishery have lowered the limit to one per person.  Please visit http://yakutatalaska.com/ for more information.

Hubbard Glacier

Yakutat is the gateway to the magnificent Hubbard Glacier.  The Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America and is located just 30 miles by air or water from Yakutat.  During the spring of 2002, as in 1986, the glacier advanced across the mouth of Russell Fiord, creating the world's largest glacial lake.
