The Yakutat Tern Festival is a celebration of the natural and cultural resources of Yakutat, Alaska. The festival is family friendly and offers activities for birders as well as non-birders, including field trips, seminars, kid’s activities, evening banquets and other programs, a race, and art.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Tenth Annual Yakutat Tern Festival is May 28 - May 31, 2020. The festival is a celebration of the natural and cultural resources of Yakutat, Alaska. Yakutat hosts one of the largest and southernmost known nesting colonies of Aleutian Terns, as well as Arctic Terns and up to 200 other bird species that nest in, or migrate through the area. The festival is family friendly and offers activities for birders as well as non-birders, including field trips, seminars, kid’s activities, evening banquets, bird banding demonstration, and other programs.

Please double check the schedule. Kayak and boat charter field trips have conflicting times. Please only initially register for one. At the event, should any circumstances change, we will offer re-registration for both trips where available. Thank you!

  • Charter Boat Tour

    TIME: 4 hours DIFFICULTY: Moderate TRANSPORTATION: Saltwater Charter Boat DESCRIPTION: This trip will depart via Yakutat based Charter Boat from the Yakutat Boat Harbor, and explore the inshore waters of Monti Bay and Yakutat Bay. Species will be similar to those listed under the Ankau River and Ocean Cape trip. Each charter boat accommodates 5 passengers plus captain and trip leader/guide. Advance registration and down payment is required (by May 1st) NOTE: This trip conflicts with Kayak Trip

  • Kayaking

    TIME: 4-5 hours DIFFICULTY: Moderate TRANSPORTATION: Van, kayak DESCRIPTION: Weather permitting, this trip will depart via kayaks from the mouth of the Situk River. Black Sand Spit, site of an Arctic and Aleutian Tern nesting colony, will be viewable, and Aleutian and Arctic Terns can be observed foraging in the estuary. This trip is contingent on interest and advance registration. This trip is recommended for participants with basic kayaking skills. NOTE: This trip conflicts with Charter Boat
